Yirgachefe Multipurpose Cook Stove Distribution Project is a small scale project activity that will disseminates fuel saving stoves for coffee farmers in Yirgachefe, Dila zuria and Wonago Districts, South Ethiopia region, Ethiopia. The project location is an area where high quality Arabica coffee is produced. Arabica coffee needs shade for proper growth and yield. The coffee forest in the area is degrading over time due to population pressure on the forest as a result of an increasing demand for fire wood. Rural communities use traditional open fire that consume huge amount of wood for cooking and is the major cause for deforestation. Baseline assessment in the project boundary indicated that coffee farmers are dependent on open fire stoves for cooking and backing. It has low efficiency (less than 10%) and consumes large amount of fuel wood and has multiple social, economic and environmental negative impacts. This project aimed to replace these technologies using multipurpose cook stoves and reduce fuel wood consumption at least by half. The new technology has thermal efficiency of 32.34% and 54% fuel wood saving potential. The stove will reduce GHG emissions, deforestation, and improve the health condition of the farmers. The action will contribute to achieving SDGs including, SDG 5- Gender Equality, SDG 7- Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG-13: Climate Action. Yirgachefe coffee union is the project proponent represented by member farmers in a written consent. The union will buy the technologies from producers and distribute to the end users. Each end user will sign a carbon transfer agreement/carbon waiver agreement on the date of installation and start using the stoves.en_US
