dc.descriptionRung’eto improved cook stove distribution project is a small scale project activity that will distribute fuel saving stoves for Rung’eto Farmers’ Cooperative Society members in Kirinyaga County, in the Mt. Kenya region . The project participants are coffee farmers who are dependent on traditional open fire cooking and the project boundary is highly subjected for forest degradation triggered by anthropogenic activities for fire wood. Extensive use of nonrenewable biomass for household energy and expansion of agricultural land are the major contributors of forest degradation in the area. To reduce the use of non-renewable biomass for household cooking, Rung’eto Farmers’ Cooperative Society designed a project aimed on installation of locally produced fuel saving stoves called Jiko kisasa. The stove has 26.6% thermal efficiency. It is designed to meet the energy demand local community and reduce the fire wood consumption thereby reduce GHG emissions, forest degradation, and improve the health condition of local community. The baseline assessment indicated that local community are using three stone /open fire/ stoves that have a thermal efficiency of less than 10% with high GHG emissions. The project aimed to replace the baseline technologies using ICS thereby reducing the environmental and health impacts associated with the use of open fire. It will contribute to achieving SDGs including, SDG 5- Gender Equality, SDG 7- Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG-13: Climate Action.en_US
