BirdLife International is a global partnership of non-governmental organisations striving to conserve birds, their &#xD;
habitats, and global biodiversity, working with people, towards sustainable use of natural resources. Currently, the &#xD;
partnership works in more than 116 countries through 117 national grassroot conservation NGO’s. In Africa, the &#xD;
BirdLife Africa Partnership is a growing network of 23 such organisations plus one Country Programme, covering &#xD;
24 countries, with a combined total of more than 300 staff and 30,000 members. Partners are involved in &#xD;
research, conservation action, environmental education and sustainable development through a broad agenda &#xD;
focusing not only on birds but also on other fauna and flora and social issues such as poverty alleviation.</description>

      <title>ASSESSSMENT OF DOWNSTREAM POLLUTION PROFILE OF  HAWASSA CITY MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER AND ITS  INFLUENCE ON LAKE HAWASSA</title>

Abstract: Lake Hawassa is used for a variety of purposes like fishing, recreation, swimming, drinking &#xD;
water supply by the communities surrounding it and cultivation of vegetables. However, it &#xD;
is exposed to wastewater discharge from the city and polluting the aquatic ecosystem. The &#xD;
objective of this study was characterization of municipal wastewater of Hawassa city and &#xD;
its impact on the receiving lake water quality. Five sites were selected from Wastewater &#xD;
channel and on the lake. A total of 20 grab samples were collected on two week basis for &#xD;
physio-chemical analysis. Samples were examined using standard procedure over the &#xD;
duration of May 2013 to July 2013. The significant pollution parameters for these effluents &#xD;
include a COD mean concentration ranged from (13.28±2.00mg/l -75.48±3.48), BOD5&#xD;
concentration of (6.03±1.74 mg/l -26.97±3.56mg/l). Chloride and total hardness &#xD;
concentrations with mean values ranged from (12.44±4.14-18.58±14.88) and &#xD;
(292.75±438.21mg/l- 49.50±14.46) respectively. Ammonia and total nitrogen &#xD;
concentrations were with mean values of ranged (0.52±0.25mg/l -4.39±0.99 mg/l) and &#xD;
(10.00±1.63-32.75±2.75mg/l) respectively. The mean phosphorus, nitrate and nitrite &#xD;
content of the effluent were also found to be 0.34±0.06mg/l -4.20±0.14, 0.41±0.25mg/l 3.77±0.34 and 0.11±0.15mg/l- 0.27±0.17 mg/l respectively. The concentration of nitrite &#xD;
was negligible when the value compared with other parameters investigated. The pH &#xD;
values were 7.36±0.52-8.31±0.28 indicating alkalinity of the wastewater. Total Dissolved &#xD;
solids, electrical conductivity and Total Suspended Solids of the effluent wastewaters were &#xD;
(513.00±45.77-755.25±162.70) mg/l, (865.00±66.73-1287.75±297.23) (μS/cm) and &#xD;
(21.75±23.89 - 276.75±109.76) mg/l, respectively. The investigation of temperature and &#xD;
turbidity ranged from 21.50±2.69 - 23.00 +2.7 OC. and 23.28±21.10NTU -226.00±35.56 &#xD;
NTU respectively. The values of most parameters were significantly different among sites, &#xD;
at 0.05 significant level of post Hoc ANOVA.</description>

Addis Ababa is the main get way into and out of the country; hence it receives many tourists.&#xD;
Besides this, the contribution of the tourism industry as a source of revenue in general and&#xD;
the contribution of ecotourism both as a source of revenue and as a means of environmental&#xD;
sustainability in particular is low. Therefore, there is a strong need to studying ecotourism, as&#xD;
part of an alternative form of tourism, for the growth of low impact tourism in the area and&#xD;
for its natural ecosystem maintenance as well as for the benefit of local population.&#xD;
Ecotourism can have many components that can broadly be categorized in to three: Natural,&#xD;
Cultural and Educative components. The aim of this paper is thus to identify potentially&#xD;
suitable sites for ecotourism in the surroundings of Addis Ababa City mainly based on the&#xD;
Natural components of ecotourism. Seven factors, namely: Land use-land cover, Soil,&#xD;
Elevation, Slope, Vegetation density, Temperature and Rainfall were considered to determine&#xD;
the suitability of an area for ecotourism. More emphasis was given to the classification and&#xD;
accuracy assessment of land use-land cover. The result, thus, showed that 84.96% overall&#xD;
accuracy and 0.82 overall kappa statistics which indicates better classification. Using Multi criteria evaluation, sites suitable for ecotourism were identified. The result showed that&#xD;
highly suitable area accounts for 11 percent, moderately suitable area for 29 percent. Less&#xD;
suitable and very less suitable area, on the other hand, accounts for 33 and 27 percent,&#xD;
respectively. Large parts of the highly suitable areas lie in the Northern, Northwestern and&#xD;
southwestern parts of the study area. Specifically, it includes areas such as ‘Suba Menagesha&#xD;
Yemengist Den’, Wolmera Goro, area around Menagesh town, Menagesha Medhanealem,&#xD;
Suba and Elala Gojo, some parts of Intoto, Legedadi, Mount Yerer and Mount Furi. Small&#xD;
parts of the highly suitable areas, on the other hand, lie in the extreme parts of the&#xD;
southeastern part of the study area. For the moderately suitable areas, except, for few that are&#xD;
found in the southern parts of the study area, the rest are found nearby the highly suitable&#xD;
areas. The least suitable areas are found dispersedly in all part of the study area. Very least&#xD;
suitable areas, however, are rare in the Northern, North western and southwestern part of the&#xD;
study area. The southern part of the study area is dominated by very least suitable areas.</description>
